for the president's health care law to be part of the fiscal talks. the white house told the "huffington post" the president opposes that. joining me now from washington, nbc white house correspondent kristen welker and neil irwin. welcome to both of you. happy holiday. >> happy holidays, alex. >> kristen, politico said the negotiations are off to a rough start. what do you see as the likelihood of a deal before the end of the year? >> alex, i think they are off to a relatively rough start. president obama expected to invite congressional leaders back to the white house next week after the holiday, but it seems at this point aides are trying to hammer out the beginnings of the deal. republicans seem to be digging in their heels on the issue of taxes, saying they don't want to see the bush era tax cuts expire for the wealthiest americans. of course, that is something the democrats have been adamant about. so they're stuck on this old issue of taxes. and also stuck on the issue of entitlements. we had harry reid come out and basically say he wasn't open to reforming especially social security.

tried to rig the election with the voter suppression laws and what they might have done, some republicans are saying, maybe we should broaden our appeal to win the next time. but these guys said, we just didn't rig it enough. and what's remarkable, you look at what husted wants to do in ohio, he wants gerrymandered house districts to determine where the vote goes. so obama would have carried the state and romney would have gotten 12 of 18 electoral votes. that doesn't make any sense. governor walker said he was concerned that this was unfair to poll workers that they had to register voters. now since these are, as far as i can tell, the only public employees for whom he's expressed sympathy, that can't be the reason they are doing this. and i just think that -- i hope this is a passing thing and that there are other forces in the republican party saying, no, we need a more fundamental rethink. they only need to shift about four votes in a hundred. you'd think they would have the confidence to win a fair election by converting just four people out of every 100 people. >> we hav

. it seems to me israel thinks it is entitled, it has a sense of privilege, it can exist above the law, and at the same time that the palestinians are excluded from the protection of the law. you get accountability for israel and you get protection for the palestinians and accordance with the law. and then you will see not just hamas, but you will see a consensus among the palestinians that we would like to live as neighbors. but if israel can't -- not just our rights but our fundamental humanity, the sense of exclusion, the process of holding everything palestinian open and up for grabs, this is something that has to stop. israel has to accept the fact that we have the right to freedom, to dignity, to our own land, to our own resources. we have accepted israel on 78% of palestine and now israel is stealing what is left of the 22% which it occupied in '67. we're saying leave us alone. let the palestinian people go. we have our state and the west bank including jerusalem and gaza, and we will live as good neighbors. >> obviously complex negotiations for all of that to occur. hanan ashra
